It’s been about a month since my last update. Quite a while, so let’s just assume I had a mini holiday. But I’m now back in business! And to start off, I thought I’d tell you about some of my favourite food websites and apps, ones I use on a regular basis, some even on a daily basis. They are all great sources of information when it comes to anything food related, and I hope you’ll find some at least as useful as I do. And if you have any websites or apps that you love, I’d love to hear about them! So here it goes.
And then you might want to cook dinner but you’re unsure what to make. My first option is usually to look through my (way too many) cookbooks, but failing the patience to do that on some nights, I have two words for you: SBS Food. Home to some of my favourite food shows (Thursday nights are best on SBS!). Not only you can browse through recipes, you can also watch videos of recipes from the different food shows which will most likely make your mouth water. In fact you might be hooked and get stuck watching for a little while, as there’s a large selection to choose from. In hindsight, it might be better for you to visit SBS Food when you’re not so hungry! Oh yes, and don’t forget to check out the Features section. And watch (or re-watch) episodes of some of the cooking shows. And the In Season section for advice on what’s good to buy each month. Yes, a website very rich in content all in all I would say.
Warning: This app WILL make you hungry! It is by far one of my favourites, and here’s how it works: You’re hungry (or bored), you’re in an area you don’t know well and/or you don’t know what you feel like eating. You start up the Foodspotting app, photos of food present in nearby restaurants will magically appear on your screen, you browse through them, you choose whatever looks good and makes you hungrier, you find out where you can find it, you go eat. Tadaaa! On the other hand, you can upload photos of great meals you’ve eaten for others to try. Simple really, but why hadn’t anyone thought of it before? You’d make better use of Foodspotting in app format on a smart phone, but they also have a website that you can use to log in to your account and still share photos and browse if you have that sudden urge for food therapy.
I cannot tell you enough good things about this website. You simply must go and browse through articles. Must! Browse until you can browse no more. This is my main source for finding out about all the cool (and weird) food related things around the world, and this includes everything from eateries to kitchen items, food packaging and labeling. I don’t know where they find it all, but I’m happy it gets delivered straight to me in one location. It is a little unfortunate they’re taking a couple of months off at the moment so there won’t be any new articles for a little while, but do look through their older ones, I dare you not to find at least a couple of things where you’ll go “whoa that is cool!”.
So after all this food has been consumed, if you’re wondering how many calories just went into your body, you can consult My Fitness Pal. This website / app allows you to search for a food item (including specific brands) to find out the calorie content, or a type of exercise to find out how many calories you’ve burned. Yes, other websites have done the same, but what’s really good with this one is that if you happen to have a smart phone, you can download the app and track what you’re consuming on the go by religiously entering every bite you eat and every step you run during the day. And if your phone can read barcodes, you can also scan food items you’re eating where possible instead of manually searching, a very handy feature!
PS: The photos are just there to make the page look prettier and make you hungry, they are not related to any of the websites.
PS2: Links to the websites are available, just click on the titles!
